Waiorau Nordic Sports Club 30 years of history
The Waiorau Nordic Sports Club has a long standing history and tradition which underlines its importance to Nordic Skiing and related sports for its members and the wider whanau. Following provides a brief club history.
1995
The club was founded in 1993 and registered officially in 1995. Originally the club carried the name "Wanaka Nordic Ski Club".
1999
In 1999, Mary Lee set up a youth development group, for the encouragement of young skiers and to help them participate in overseas competitions.
2013
In 2013, the club has been re-named as the Waiorau Nordic Sports Club (WNSC) to recognise the area in which the ski field lies and to encompass all nordic sport enjoyed. The youth development group was subsequently merged into the WNSC. The then still young biathlon division is associated but retains its own administration and structure.
2014
The club starts raising what would be more than $25,000 in grants for youth development handed out over the next ten years. This money assists our younger club members to further their development.
2022
Following the evacuation of the Snow Farm from the Southern Hemisphere Proving Ground (SHPG) premises, the club starts raising capital for its own functional premises.
2023/2024
The club installs two ski and gear locker containers as well as a professional ski waxing facility with now over 100 lockers and two waxing banks including fume extraction through the helping hand of generous and technically versed club members.
2024/2025
The club starts raising capital and engages with Snow Farm over a medium to long term structure for a multi-functional class room and member lounge allowing winter & summer use.
